Who will run for Governor besides Rory Smith?
I was listening to WPRO talk show host Dan Yorke criticize GOP gubernatorial candidate Rory Smith yesterday. Unfortunately, the criticism seems to be well-deserved. I started hearing Rory Smith's name mentioned for Governor about a month ago. At that time, I had never heard of him. Since his decision to file a notice of organization, I have read a few things about him, along with hearing some interviews on the radio. I'm not impressed.
During Smith's first appearance on Yorke's show, he seemed to be evasive and offered no insights into his plans. On an appearance on Buddy Cianci's show, he appeared clueless and ill-prepared. He seemed to have little knowledge of facts a politician should have a handle on, and even seemed to be out of the loop when questions were asked about his home town of East Greenwich. Rory Smith might still turn out to be a decent candidate, but if he doesn't hit the books, create a plan, and share his vision, his candidacy will go nowhere.
So, what are our options? One name that hasn't gone away is Steve Laffey, and I doubt it will any time soon. From what I've read, it seems like there is a better than average chance that he will run. I've never heard him say he wouldn't want to be Governor. Instead, he talks about the need to have an electorate that was ready for the type of changes he would need to make. That sounds like someone who is setting the stage for an announcement. There was also talk about former AG Arlene Violet jumping into the race. Although, I haven't heard much lately.
If Smith does turn out to be the GOP candidate in the general election, I'd feel much better about his chances if he were able to get by a tough opponent. Normally, I wouldn't want to see a GOP primary, since it would be a waste of resources for the Republican candidate. However, this situation is different. If he has difficulty during a radio interview, how will he handle a televised gubernatorial debate?
