Don Carcieri Wrongly Criticizes Elizabeth Roberts
Don Carcieri has criticized Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts for questioning the $370,000 being paid to the Lucas Group for "voluntary work." Here is part of Robert's criticism:
"I am gravely concerned at the actions of the governor and the Department of Human Services that resulted in a no-bid contract for a personal friend of Secretary Alexander ... Circumventing procurement rules, bypassing contract procedures, misleading the public and employing cronyism at any level is unacceptable, and undermines the public's confidence in government, especially at this crucial time."
Don Carcieri is correct in pointing out that Elizabeth Roberts has been opposed to the Global Medicaid Waiver. He could have also thrown in that she is probably going to run for Governor and is probably looking for publicity. Both facts are relevant, and could be used to establish her bias. If that's the case, then how can my opinion be explained? I gladly voted for Don Carcieri twice, wouldn't vote for Elizabeth Roberts under any circumstances, and I support the Global Medicaid Waiver. Despite these facts, I'm highly suspicious of the facts surrounding the Lucas Group. At the very least, the hiring of the Lucas Group was mishandled. That fact alone, coupled with Gary Alexander's fundraising for John Stephens of the Lucas Group, leave many questions unanswered. The best way to answer those questions is by conducting a thorough investigation.
