Protesting Protester Registration

I wonder what would happen if the G-8 Summit were to be held in Providence.  Would David Cicilline declare a curfew and order all citizens to stay in their houses?  Probably not, since most of the protesters would be protesting about things that had nothing to do with the mayor.  While there are many different groups planning to protest, the one that has received the most attention is the Providence firefighter's union, Local 799, which is directly targeting David Cicilline.  That can happen when you lack the common decency to sit down and negotiate with a union that has been without a contract for all 7 years of his administration.

What I find troubling is that people are being herded like cattle into designated areas, told to register (which they claim is voluntary), then told they will be subject to searches of their belongings.  The whole situation is troubling, but the search stipulation is the worst.  Is it meant to intimidate the critics?  It certainly looks that way to me.  As of now, the ACLU isn't planning any legal action, but that could change depending on what happens this weekend.

There will be many groups protesting, and each will have a particular cause that is important to them.  What I would like to see is someone protest protester registration.  Now that's an idea!
