RIRepublican.com News

Here are some things going on behind the scenes.  You probably won't care much, but if you visit often, you might.

* Are you on Twitter?  If you are, look for me!  My user name is RIRepublican.  It's another great way to get blog updates.

* RIRepublican's traffic has been rising steadily since its inception in September of 2008.  As a matter of fact, according to BlogNetNews.com it is already the third most popular conservative blog in Rhode Island.  Sure, detractors might point out that there are only three conservative blogs in the state that are ranked: This one, AnchorRising.com, and OceanStateRepublican.com.  Although, I try not to focus on that.  After all, I am in the top three!.

* I'm looking for individuals who would be interested in blogging.  It's a great way to vent or bring attention to an event or topic you would like to discuss.

* I would like to change my blog platform.  I made the mistake of starting my blog on Godaddy's Quick Blogcast.  I would like to switch to Wordpress because of some of its features.  The problem is that Godaddy tech support says I can only transfer 100 entries and no categories or comments.  As you might imagine, I have substantially more entries than that.  If anyone knows of a way I can transfer my entries to Wordpress, or another blog platform, please post some of your ideas in the comments section

There might be a limit to transfer entries, but I don't think there's a limit to export. You should be able to export your blog entries as a text file... and your comments along with them. I don't know how easy it would be to import that text file into Wordpress, but I could ask around.

    1. I would set up a mock/test blog on Wordpress to test it all out first. It's free so you should be able to make

    2. Make sure that any other user that posted on the old blog (Quick Blogcast) is also a user on your mock site (Wordpress). When you import the entries by different authors into Wordpress, it's going to ask you to associate those old authors with current users. If there's no user in Wordpress that wrote an old blog in Blogcast, then you'll have to associate that entry with another user... possibly yourself.

    3. Export all the entries with categories, comments, etc. from Blogcast to a textfile. It sounds like you know how to do this so I won't go through it.

    4. Now open up that textfile that you saved in WordPad (I didn't use Notepad or MSWord, so I don't know if there are any quirks if you decide to use either of them.) What you want to do is edit the file a bit. You want to get rid of any instances of the phrase - "STATUS: Published" - that is in the file. So on the Wordpad menu, click -Edit-, then -Replace- . In the Find what textbox type -> Status: Published, and leave the Replace with textbox empty... now let it do its thing and replace all the instances of that phrase. Now save the file.

    5. I would go back and do another Find what in the textfile to make sure all of the phrases of "Status: Published" are removed. I would also do a Find what in the textfile of the word - Status: - because there might be some other type of variation of the phrase "Status: " (like Status: Draft) that might get overlooked. Once you're sure that all of those phrases are out, then save your textfile.

    6. Now go to your mock Wordpress blog. On the Wordpress dashboard, go to -Tools-, and select -Import- . You'll then get a list of the different ways you can import into Wordpress. You want to select the - Movable Type and Typepad - option.

    7. Choose the textfile from your computer and upload. The maximum file size to upload is 15MB. If your file is too big, then let me know and I'll show you how to split the file.

    8. You'll then have to assign authors from the Blogcast blog entries to users on your mock Wordpress blog. Once done, click - Submit -

    9. All the entries will be imported as Drafts. Go to the Posts section on the Wordpress dashboard. You can then select all those blog entries to do a bulk edit on them, and change their status to Published... should be one quick step.

    10. Double check some of the entries (either before or after Step 9) and make sure everything looks OK.

That should be it. Once the mock blog looks OK, then you can repeat the process on the real blog. Let me know how it turns out. This was all done as volunteer work... which means you can expect a bill in the mail.

    Hey Damien,

Not sure if it matters, but you Word Press doesn't allow affiliate advertisements. I just found that out after starting my WP blog and signin up with a few affiliate programs. . . This may not matter so much to you, still, just FYI.

I might be interested in blogging depending on what topics you are hoping to cover.

    Let me know what's good.
