Rhode Island House Votes to Ban Indoor Prostitution
After failing to make it out of committee for the last 4 years, a vote to ban indoor prostitution made it to a vote before the full house. Unfortunately, representatives voted 62 to 8 to make indoor prostitution illegal. It's surprising that a bill that struggled to get out of committee for so long was able to pass by such an overwhelming margin.
I really feel the extraordinary amount of support was due to some legislators being afraid to be on the "wrong" side when it is time for reelection. Plus, we have those legislators who think that something is right just because every other state does it. Therefore, since indoor prostitution is illegal almost everywhere else, it must also be illegal in Rhode Island. That type of thinking is rather mindless to me.
From talking to people and reading comments online, it seems like the majority of Rhode Islanders were fine with the law just the way it was. Most said consenting adults should be left alone, while my argument is that it will increase outdoor prostitution, since the bulk of this activity probably moved indoors where it is legal. If the law does take effect, only time will tell who is right.
