Same-Sex Marriage: Silencing Carrie Prejean
By now, you've probably heard about how Miss California Carrie Prejean was asked about her opinions on same-sex marriage by blogger Perez Hilton. She responded by saying, "I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised." That should have been the end of it, but it seems that some mean spirited people can't accept that someone might disagree with them.
There is now an attempt to take Carrie Prejean's crown because she posed for pictures in her underwear. This piece on non-news then resulted in Miss Rhode Island Alysha Castonguay being dragged into the story, since she appeared in Maxim while she was a cheerleader for the New England Patriots. To her credit, Alysha Castonguay has defended Carrie Prejean and her right to offer her opinion, along with the unpublished pictures.
You might be wondering why I'm writing about this on a political blog. There are two reasons. First, it gives me an excuse to post pictures of Alysha Castonguay and Carrie Prejean. The second, and most important reason, is the sickening tendency to drag people through the mud when they don't agree. Do you think there would have been so much media coverage if Carrie Prejean supported same-sex marriage? Would she have people searching for controversial photos and trying to take her crown? I think we all know the answer to these questions.
For those of you who read this blog regularly, you know that I strongly support same-sex marriage. I think it is an embarassment that Rhode Island has not passed a law allowing same-sex marriage. With that said, I don't think it's appropriate to target someone because they (respectfully) voiced views different from your own.
Now, on a less serious note, here are pictures of Alysha Castonguay and Carrie Prejean. Again, I'm only posting these pictures in order to help my readers better understand the situation.
