To Bow or Not to Bow, That Is the Question
Did Barack Obama bow when he met King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia? If you look at the picture or video on the Politico page, it certainly looks like a bow. The foreign press and Washington Post also seemed to interpret the action in the same way. I certainly don't like the idea of a U.S. President bowing to royalty, but I think the worst part is the weak excuse and denial offered by the White House: "It wasn't a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he's taller than King Abdullah,"
I could be wrong, but it sure looks like a bow to me, and the height excuse is nonsense. I'm 6'3", and I've never had to "bow" to shake hands with someone. If you look at the video, there appears to be about a 6 inch difference in height. Obama also bows so that his head is below the King's shoulder level, and he begins when he is 5 or 6 feet away. It was a bow, and Obama's advisers are insulting our intelligence by providing such laughable excuses.
