William Murphy Supports Expanding T.F. Green's Main Runway

William Murphy has offered strong support for expanding the main runway at T.F. Green airport.  The proposal has been discussed for years, but has gone nowhere because of neighborhood opposition.  Here are some quotes from William Murphy:

“We’ve been talking about expanding the airport for years. Now I don’t mean to sound callous, but you have maybe 200 people that are in the vicinity who protest anytime there’s a plan to expand the runway at our airport,” an animated Murphy told the crowd of 650 at the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Rhode Island Convention Center. “…The bottom line is it’s time to forget what the naysayers are saying. Let’s build an airport.”

“What do you say [Senate President] Paiva Weed?” Murphy continued. “Get your crew together, we’ll get our crew together. Let’s expand the airport. Let’s just do it.”

I don't remember too many occasions where a public official has offered such strong support for a project.  Of course, Theresa Paiva Weed didn't have much to offer:

Beside him however, Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed seemed taken by surprise. “I’m not ready to make the public commitment to that specific project…” she said.

I'm glad to see William Murphy take a stand on this issue.  A strong airport is beneficial to Rhode Islanders and others in the surrounding region.  Extending the runway will help attract west coast flights and international flights.  The addition of the new train station near T.F. Green will further enhance the airport, along with the local economy.

Those who live in close proximity to the airport will undoubtedly complain, but they need to be ignored.  An airport has been in that location in some form for over 80 years.  If neighbors don't like the noise, traffic, and congestion associated with an airport, then they shouldn't have moved next to one.  We cannot allow a handful of people to derail a project that will benefit more than 1 million Rhode Islanders, and enhance transportation choices for Southern New Englanders.
