Tom Daschle's Taxes Don't Add Up

It looks like another potential member of Barack Obama's cabinet accidentally forgot to pay his taxes.  First Timothy Geithner failed to pay some of his taxes, and now we find out that Tom Daschle, who is the nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, owed more than $100,000.  Once he realized his error, he filed amended tax returns and paid the taxes along with interest.  I'm glad Tom Daschle paid the taxes he owed, but I find this excerpt troubling:

Daschle spokeswoman Jenny Backus said that Daschle "he expressed his regret, he knew he made a mistake and he was fully responsible for it. He fixed it to the nth degree by filing all these amended returns. He is embarrassed. He fixed it and answered all these questions about it."

She added, "He is the one who brought it to their attention. It is a stupid mistake."

Notice that Tom Daschle, "brought it to their attention."   If Tom Daschle brought it to the attention of Barack Obama's administration, that tells me that he either intentionally dodged paying his taxes, or at least had a feeling that his taxes weren't correct.  I also find it more than coincidental that he happens to realize there were errors around the time that he is nominated to a cabinet position.  Do you think Tom Daschle would have pointed out his "mistake" if there weren't the possibility of a cabinet position in his future?  I highly doubt it.
