We Can't Afford the Open Space, But There is Still Hope!
The State of Rhode Island wants to sell property it acquired to complete the reloaction of 195, and neighbors aren't happy about it. The land, which was formally the site of Shooters nightclub, was purchased by the State for $4.5 million. The Department of transportation is hoping to get at least $3.5 million, which is the appraised value.
Neighbors want the land set aside as open space or a public use, but this isn't realistic. First, the State has major economic troubles. Second, the DOT is looking for ways to raise money, so I don't see them passing up the opportunity to add almost $4 million. Remember how the Governor's Blue Ribbon Comission suggested taxing mileage, raising the fees for registrations, raising the gas tax, and adding toll booths? It doesn't seem likely that the DOT will let money slip through its fingers.
The economy is gloomy, but there could be a bright spot. The property should be sold, and hopefully redeveloped. It would create jobs and add to Providence's tax base (if owned by a for-profit entity). However, the neighbors shouldn't be ignored. There's no reason why future development can't have set backs that provide for open space. The place for neighbors to focus is the Mayor and City Council.
