Marriage Equality Rhode Island Leads Protest at the State House
500 people gathered outside the State House yesterday to protest the passage of Proposition 8 in California, and to encourage Rhode Island to support marriage equality. The only legislator quoted in the article was representative Frank Ferri who said, “this State House is going to bring you marriage equality.” Unfortunately, I'm not as confident as Mr. Ferri.
As someone who supports limited government and personal liberty, I strongly support marriage equality. With that said, the few states that have legalized gay marriage have done so through the courts. The article points out that if Rhode Island were to pass legislation legalizing gay marriage, we would be the first in the nation to do so. Passing such legislation requires a type of leadership and foresight that I just don't see the current General Assembly possessing in any great quality.
