School Consolidation: It Might Really Happen

Earler this week, Dan Beardsley, from the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns mentioned the possibility of consolidating school districts.  Today, Representative Thomas Slater also mentioned the possibility:

Slater, a Providence Democrat, also joined the growing chorus that’s calling for consolidation of school districts. “We are such a small state, we have to learn to consolidate,” he said, adding that he will submit legislation to do so as soon as the session begins.

With the current deficit at $372 million and growing, bold action must be taken.  The devil will be in the details, but it is encouraging to see the state finally address big issues.  It will be interesting to see which legislators join Thomas Slater, and which ones try to block consolidation.
