Same-Sex Marriage Begins in Connecticut
A Connecticut judge's ruling yesterday cleared the way for gay marriage. Shortly after the ruling, couples began applying for marriage licenses and some were married. The ruling follows an October 10th State Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex couples to have the same right to marriage as heterosexual couples. Massachusetts is the only other state which allows same-sex marriage. It was legal in California, but was recently banned in California when a statewide referendum was passed.
This brings up an important question: When will Rhode Island allow same-sex marriage? I've heard arguments in favor of it for years, but proponents seem to fold under pressure and adopt a "next year" mentality. My guess is that many legislators approve of gay marriage but are afraid to take sides because it is controversial. At the very least, I would like to see a same-sex marriage bill debated and voted on in the General Assembly. They have dodged the issue long enough.
