David Cicilline: Unions Picket Fund Raiser
You know things are getting weird when I agree with Providence Mayor David Cicilline. As I am typing this entry, more than 500 city employees from 6 unions are picketing outside a Cicilline fundraiser at Waterplace Park. The unions are angry that their new contracts include health care coverage from United Health rather than Blue Cross. The City says the level of coverage is similar, and will save the Providence tax payers $8 million.
If the level of coverage is similar, then it's hard for me to have sympathy for the unions. I can understand why they want to keep the same health coverage, but sacrifices need to be made. Property owners have been making these sacrifices since David Cicilline became Mayor, because of his propensity to raise taxes. Since we are already paying a high rate on an exorbitant assessment, we need to find saving where ever we can.

I have to agree with you on this post. The unions in Rhode Island are way too powerful. They have the ear of the state house and have driven businesses away from the state out of fear of dealing with the Unions.
Unions have certainly had their place throughout history. However, there power needs to be significantly decreased in Rhode Island. Otherwise, we won't be able to attract new businesses to the state and won't enjoy true economic recovery. That's just my 2cp.
