Keep An Eye On California Proposition 8
As many of you know, same-sex marriage is allowed in California. The State Supreme Court ruled that civil unions violated the equal protection clause in the California Constitution. As a result, same-sex marriage became legal. Now, opponents of same-sex marriage are using California as a battleground for the issue.
On November 4th, citizens will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 8, which is titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. As the title indicates, passage of the proposition would amend the State Constitution making same-sex marriage illegal. From what I've seen, the poll numbers are close, which surprises me. Despite these polls, I do expect Proposition 8 to be voted down, protecting the right of same-sex couples to marry. Even though you may not live in California, this is an important question to watch. Either way, it will have important ramifications for the rest of the country.
