John McCain Catching Up to Barack Obama in Polls

I have Yahoo.com set as my home page, and each day I check out the poll numbers for the Presidentail race between John McCain and Barack Obama.  I was starting to get nervous about a week or so ago when I saw Obama's lead grow to about 8%.  Over the last few day, that trend has appeared to reverse itself, and the lead is down to 4.9%.  This may not seem like a big change, but with just over two weeks to go in the election, the trend is showing that the race is tightening.  This is particularly impressive when you consider that Barack Obama raised an unprecedented $150 million in September alone.

Today's Providence Journal had an editorial about ACORN and the investigation into their potential voter registration fraud.  They raised a good point that I hadn't considered: When polls are done, sampling is based on voter registration totals.  If ACORN is inflating these numbers, couldn't it have an impact on poll numbers, inflating Barack Obama's total?  It certainly wouldn't account for the entire lead, but it is conceivable that it could make the race appear to be outside the margin of error, when in fact, it isn't.  The election may be much closer than you think.
