United Natural Foods Relocating to Providence: Finally, Some Good News

Today's Providence Journal is reporting that United Natural Foods will be relocating their corporate headquarters from Dayville Connecticut to Providence.  Initially, the company will employ 150 workers with the potential for up to 240.  The company will be receiving some combination of tax breaks from the city and state, but as of now, no details are available.

What makes this story even better is the location: American Locomotive Works (ALCO).  If you're not familiar with ALCO, it's a large development near Valley St. which will eventually include nearly 2 million square feet of commercial, retail, and residential development.  It will include some new construction, but a sizable portion involves rehabing historic commercial buildings.  Some of the neighbors complained that the developer, Struever Bros., Eccles, and Rouse, was gentrifying the area.  It seems that some don't like to look at attractive property which creates jobs, makes the neighborhood more convenient, and adds some income diversity.  The only problem with ALCO is that there aren't more developments like it.
