T.F. Green Airport: A Third Option For Runway Expansion

http://www.projo.com/business/content/BZ_Airport_expansion_10-05-08_4IBQD0P_v44.15367aa.html

There is currently a third proposal on the table to expand the runway at T.F. Green Airport to 8,700 feet.  The longer runway would allow planes to carry more passengers, and allow flights to the West Coast and Europe.  The third proposal should face less opposition since it would have a smaller impact on neighbors, it would be cheaper, and require less work on surrounding roads.  With that said, you know the neighbors are going to complain.

It seems that many of the neighbors don't want an airport as a neighbor.  I have to say that I don't blame them.  The traffic and noise would drive me crazy, but here's the difference: I didn't buy a house near an airport!  When you decide to purchase a house near an airport, you have to accept the ramifications of that decision.  Some of the neighbors have argued that the airport wasn't as large or as busy as it is now, which is true, but let's not forget that an airport has been there in some form since 1928.  So, unless you purchased your home before 1928, I really don't have any sympathy for you.

In a State that needs all the economic development it can get, expanding the airport is a necessity.  Let's hope the NIMBY's don't succeed in derailing this worthy project.
